We worked with some of Yorkshire’s most promising emerging music artists, providing professional support packages which included live showcases, global music releases, radio sessions, master classes and festival appearances, through our exciting initiative Breakthrough 2015
Breakthrough 2015 was a competitive programme and was FREE to enter for emerging music artists from the Yorkshire region who didn’t currently have a recording or publishing contract. The project was a partnership between Higher Rhythm and Help Musicians UK and is part funded by Help Musicians and Arts Council England
We received 93 submissions from diverse music artists from all over the Yorkshire region. Our panel of 5 judges, including promoters, managers, BBC Radio presenters and a main stage booker for Glastonbury Festival, worked independently to each other, assesing each artist on 3 categories; musicianship, web presence and impact.
5 artist were selected and played a showcase gig at Maida Vale Sheffield on Friday 17th April which was live recorded. The recordings formed live single releases, released in July 2015, in the run up to the Breakthrough 2015 showcase at Tramlines on 26th July 2015. The artists were supported with radio and mentor sessions throughout to help them promote and get the best out of their festival appearances and releases.
Supreme Leaders were selected for the Glastonbury 2016 Emerging Talent strong list, Jack the Rapper was selected for a BBC 1xtra showcase gig and receive national radio play-out, Knaves went on to supported some big acts such as Heaven 17, and Vendettas record increased by several hundred percent. All in all the project was a huge success and we have taken the learning from this to inform our ongoing ‘holistic’ support work with music artists
